My father, who gets his pension from Govt. Of India (deposited into a bank in India), is thinking of becoming US citizen. Could some one comment/share their experience:
1. Does canceling the Indian Passporrt, in a consulate in US, updates the records in India (e.g pension office in Delhi, bank)
2. Or de we need to inform them individually?
3. Will he continue to get his pension?
4. If so, can it be deposited into a US Bank?
5. Any other steps involved

Thanks in advance

--------------- it does not update the pension office or bank. but the record will be updated with Indian immigration dept or Ministry of external affairs.

2. Or de we need to inform them individually?
------------- not needed
3. Will he continue to get his pension?
-------YES
4. If so, can it be deposited into a US Bank?
------------NO, it has to be in Indian bank account and according to RBI his account will become NRO(non Resisident ordinary) account if he informs the bank . many dont prefer to inform because in NRO accunt if you earn intrest then 30 % is cut by the bank.
5. Any other steps involved
----- do nothing, let his pension go to his Bank account in India.

Thanks in advance

Pension Income in India

Please tell me more about

1. What your father does about Income Tax deductions and Filing returns in India for pension and other income if any
2. How does he file proof of living (so as to continue to get pension)
3. Do you claim him as dependent in US or he files a US tax return also ?

Thanks for help.

Chanakya,

Just send me the pension money...:) I need all of the money as I can use it for something else. I believe your dad will be fine, you can take care of him.

Why not contact the Indian government directly to find out if they will continue to pay the pension of someone who has given up their Indian citizenship?

I think the OP is confused about this process. The question he's asking isn't an immigration question per ser in line with the purposes of this discussion board. I wonder which government will continue paying someone a pension who just renounced their citizenship for another country... In the even that the Indian govt is that generous, I am asking the OP to forward me all the pension money...:D

Well, he earned his retirement. His citizenship should have nothing to do with it. US government will pay (maybe ;) ) Social Security to non-citizens and will continue to pay SS benefits even if a person renounces his/hers US citizenship. It has nothing to do with generousness, and all to do with taxes paid.

Posting this on behalf of a close relative:
1) Is Aadhar card mandatory for a widow of Indian origin to get pension of any kind such as vidhwa pension or survivor benefits or family pension? Kindly share the latest official links quoting these rules that I can refer to.
2) What are the widow benefits schemes if her spouse was working in private multiple firms and not a Government employee?
3) Should the widow be resident or living in India to apply or receive the survivor benefits? This is in connection with the widow who is of Indian origin, and is an overseas citizen of India.
