Pending work permit and drivers license

My application has been pending for 6+ months. In the beginning of this month, I applied for the work permit and got the receipt last week. I am in still in opt and it will expire this July 5th 13. So, instead of extending my opt, I am planning to get my asylum based work permit and skip the student status. The problem is that my drivers license will expire July 5th as well. So, to renew it, do I need to get the asylum based work permit first or I can show DMV the receipt and other asylum documents to renew my license?
Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Do I need to do my biometrics again for the work permit?
Also, how long does it take from the time they receive the application?
