Pending Tax

Hello all,
Please help me in this Taxation case:

I came to US on H1B in 1998 and after working for 5 years, left for India in 2003. I paid taxes every year. Last year in 2004, my friend in US informed me over the phone that I had recieved a letter at his address from IRS stating that I still owed some taxes from year 2000. And because I was now in India, and they must be trying to reach me, and thinking that I was evading tax, they also started adding penalities to the same.

1) Is it possible that I could talk to someone to find if I really owed tax and payoff the taxdue, and have my penalities waived off due to my being in India?

2) Also, do I need to sort this matter before my visit to US or can it be resolved once I am in US? Would it create a problem for me to get into US from the Port of entry?

Thanks very much,
Mr Late

They could start the process of charging you for "criminal tax evasion" and then you could be stopped at the POE for that and have problems entering US

Thanks for the information, Bhand11683.

I actually called the IRS and found that my Federal Taxes are all paidup. So it could be a problem with my state tax. Do you think I could still be held at the POE for my pending state taxes?

thanks,
Late
