Pending new DS-2019, how long can I stay in the US?

Hi all,

I am on J-1 Clinical visa and my current DS-2019 expires on June, 30. 2009. I have already applied for the new DS-2019 and I anticipate it to be approved soon. However, if it takes a longer time than expected how long can I stay in the US? Also, if the DS-2019 is approved after I leave the country, Can I come back although 2-yr rule applies to me?

you can stay for upto 60 days after the date in your ds expires, however if you have already applied for a new one you dont have to worry because however, the new one you get will have no date discrepancies. just relax and wait for the document to come. in general i think you can stay in j visa for upto 6 years.

I am going to extend my DS-2019. Is there a possibility that the officer signed on DS-2019 for extention althuogh J1-visa is impossible because of the 6 uear limitation?
I am thinking to get J1-visa with the extended DS-2019
if I need to travel outside US.
Is there a possibility that I cannot get J1-visa because I have been
on J1-visa more than 6 years although I have effective DS-2019?
Should I also prepare for F1 visa application just in case?
