Pending I-485 and Passport Expiration

I have I-485 pending (RD 02/27/2004) and my passport will expire in about 6 months.

1. At the time of I-485 adjudication, does an expired passport raise RFE? Anybody had such experience?

2. Has anyone proactively sent renewed passport to USCIS while I-485 is pending?

3. Does USCIS approve I-485 anyway, you only need to have a current passport at the time of GC stamping?

Given the long waiting, I'm afraid quite a few people had their passport expired before I-485 is approved.

As far as I know they will check passport validity at time of GC stamping (should be valid for atleast 6 months at time of stamping). If you do not have a valid passport for travel and a valid I-94 you can still stay in USA and you are not breaking any law. Passport is one of the travel documents. It is required only for travel. It is not necessary that you have a valid passport at all times with you. Even visas are granted beyond the validity of passport. The H1B visa stamp on my passport expires one month after my passport expires. Even my current I-94 expires after my passport expires.

But these are my views only. Act on them at your risk.

Why cant you apply for a new passport now in Newyork incase if you reside in the Tristate area and keep it safe. New Passports are issued within a day, if you go directly to the Consulate or if you can apply through mail, then it takes around one month.

I have done this before and have been successful. But, you are worrying too much...

Just as 'Want GC Soon' had said... there is no necessity for you to panic. Apply for renewal and u should get the renewed passport in about a months time depending on ur country.
