Pending 485 - what determines if you are in status

My wife has entered the U.S. on Advance Parole and is working on EAD. She was on H-4 before. Her I-485 is pending with Vermont Service center. The I-94 that she recieved, when entering the U.S. has the following line on it.

"Paroled Pursuant to Sec 212 (d) (5) of the I &N act to: Feb 27, 2006 purpose DA I512 AOS"

Here are my questions
1. What does the above line mean and what is the significance of Feb 27, 2006 in the above line
2. What exactly determines if one is in status or out of status, when I-485 is pending

Please help.

My guess, since I am not an attorney and USCIS has never explained this policy, is that a person with an AP I-94 with no expiry date might never accumulate illegal presence if the I-485 was denied and they were out of status.

When the I-485 is pending you are in legal status.
