Yes you need to get the clearance letter from the nearest Indian Consulate or Embassy in the U.S. and nothing from Indian side.

Hi,

Thank You very much for your reply.

However, since I am staying in the US right now, the local police station in India as well as the Regional passport office in India are refusing to give the PCC and are asking me to apply for the PCC at the Indian Consulate in New York.

I have already applied for the PCC at the Indian Consulate in New York.

The officials at the Indian Consulate, New York told me that when I apply for a PCC at New York, the Indian Consulate forwards the enquiry to the Passport office in India which issued my Passport as well as my local police station and ONLY after they get clearance from these two, will they issue me the PCC.

So, in the light of this, will the PCC issued by the Indian Consulate here in New York be enough?

Please advice.

Regards.

Subject: Do I need Police Clearance?

Hi,
I am expecting a Consular Interview for my Employment Based Immigrant Visa
sometime in January/February. My case number is #############.
I have not stayed in any other country except India and the United States.
Now, would I need to get a Police Clearance document when I come for my
interview?
Your website says that people like me do not require a police clearance
certificate. However, I heard from a friend of mine that a notice has been
put up at your consulate saying that from January 2002, all Immigrant Visa
applicants need to get 2 police clearances when they attend the interview.
Please advice.
Regards.

natcam..plz check private msg

I met you at the indian embassy in NYC ..
remember .. when you were all set to kill the lady behind the counter ?
:)

They even screwed my stuff up .. its amazing how an embassy official can be so incompetent.

I ve sent you a private message ..

Good Work!

I dont know what else we can do. Mumbai has confirmed verbally to many of us (including me) and now this email. Even if we doubt what they say, I dont think they will put it in writing in an email unless they are sure about the policy now. Hope they update their FAQ.

Here the reply from consulate

Below is the email I got from mumbai consulate, but if u have a passport issued from India, the embassy out here takes 30-45 days for PCC.

Since you have been living abroad, what you require is only a letter from the nearest Indian Consulate or Embassy.

Dear Sir/Madam,

As of January 1, 2002, ALL immigrant visa applicants over age 16 MUST present Indian Police Certificates. Two certificates must be obtained as follows: 1) a certificate from your local police station; 2) a certificate from your Regional Passport Office.

What should be the contents of the certificate from passport office.

Do I require a local police certificate from US local police also.??

Please clarify my doubts regarding this new requisites.

Thanks and Regards,
Moiz.

I was in SF consulate to apply for my PCC..as expected extremely chaotic inside the consulate....Now the lady at the counter asked me if my PCC is regarding US, Canada, xxx .... I replied US and asked her if that is what is required for the US immigration...She hurriedly answered in the positive and i was pushed out my the next token guy...
