Hi Guys,
This forum rocks! Have answer for everyones every question!
I would likw to know that when I get my PCC from San Franciso consulate (Indian consulate),will that cover for any countries I have stayed after I turned 16?
In my case,I have stayed in London for 1 yr and when I called London police station, they told me that the indian consualate in USA should take care of it.
Any ideas?

My understanding is that the PCC from Indian counsulate would cover only the duration of your stay in India. For all other countries wherever you have stayed for more than one year after turning 16, you would have to get a PCC from that country.

There are certain countries that do not issue PCC & the State department has listed those countries, where one is exempted from taking PCC.

To get a better understanding of it, visit:

good luck.

I concur with titu. For every country you have stayed in for more than 12 months after you turned 16 years, you will have to go thru the PCC application process @ the embassy / consulate of that country in USA.

So for Indian PCC you go to SFO Indian Consulate. For Japanese PCC you could go to Japanese consulate in USA (if any) and so on..

kdivekar i think you mean for every country you stayed for more than a year not 6 months you need PCC. eg if your indian and stayed in dubai for 7 months you don't need PCC from dubai.
thanks

ooops good catch! PCC is required for each country where after reaching 16 years one has stayed for more than 1 year (not 6 months)! Changed above from 6 months to 12 months!

What does "stay" mean?

If a person was in another country on a visitor visa for more than 12 months, would it mean that he/she has to get the PCC from that country's consulate in the US?

Or does "stay" mean work and earn in another country?

thanks

Thanks,
Yedati

Hello guys, I am a little confused about the PCC.

Would be great to get clarified about my personal case.

My first passport was issued from Passport Office of my state capital where I was residing before I started my career.

Thereafter, I worked in 5 different states.

I left India for Country "A" where I was physically present for about 350 days.

I returned to India and stayed for almost 2 years in 2 different states (they are among the above 5).

Then I moved to the US and before the above passport expired, I got it renewed here in the US (they gave me a new passport which is stapled to the old one).

I am planning to go for CP at Mumbai.

Questions :

1. Would it suffice if I get a PCC from the Indian Consulate here in
the US?

2. Do I need to get the PCC individually from all the 5 states in
India where I worked, irrespective of the period of stay in
such states?

3. Do I need to get the PCC from Country "A" ?

Thanks a lot

Ps: I am sorry for posting such a long and confusing story:D

1. Would it suffice if I get a PCC from the Indian Consulate here in
the US?
answer: Yes. Since your new passport was issued in usa you should be able to get the pcc in 1 day.

2. Do I need to get the PCC individually from all the 5 states in
India where I worked, irrespective of the period of stay in
such states?
answer: No need of multiple pcc's. Above 1 indian pcc covers all indian states.

3. Do I need to get the PCC from Country "A" ?
asnwer: PCc of third country is required if one stays in that country for more than 12 months after he/ she has reached the age of 16 years. In your case, since you stayed in country A for 11.5 months, if i were you i would get a PCC just becoz it is as good as 12 months.

I did like your long story. Hopefully my short answers satisfy your quest!

1.What is the procedure at SFO?
Ans: Go to this site and download the miscellaneous form for PCC application, send the cashier check and apply for the PCC.
http://www.indianconsulate-sf.org/
Since your passport was issued in usa, you will get pcc in 1 day plus mailing time.

2.If I obtain the PCC from SFO today, how long will it be valid for
the purposes of CP?
answer: Indian pcc's are valid for 6 months. that means your pcc should not be older than 6 months on the date of your cp interview.

3. what kind of medical tests are performed?
Answer: Tell the doctor you are there for immigration checkup and they know the rest. BASically a full physical checkup but here is a sample:
15 years of age and older: (includes complete medical consultation, chest X-ray, ELISA HIV test, VDRL for Syphilis, and MMR vaccination)
Below 15 years of age: (includes complete medical consultation, X-ray, and MMR vaccination)
May include: HIV (Western Blot), Sputum Smear, Consultation with Psychiatrist, Varicella Vaccine, Pneumococcal Vaccine,
Hib Vaccine and Hepatitis Vaccine.

4. he has been smoking 4-5 cigarettes a day for the past about
10 years but does not take alcohol or any drugs. would this smoking be a problem for his medical exam?
Answer: Generally not. What doctors are most concerned about are contagious diseses that can be spread easily resulting into epidemic. Since smoking is injurious to ones own health and not to others it shoudl not be a problem.

5. would the doctor ask him if he smokes or not?
answer: i am sure doctor would recomend but will not affect immig visa. And I also strongly recommend not for immigration purposes but for your own health. Smoking is not a reason for rejection. So dont worry about it.

6. would the doctor perform some additional tests because he
smokes?
Asnwer: Generally No unless he feels it is good for your health.

5. would it be better if he gets some tests or scans, etc done here
in the US itself before he has his actual medicals in India?
Answer: If you want you can do for your own sake but those tests will not hold good for immigration purposes in india/ any other country where the consulate interview will happen. I am doing a full physical check up next week but for my own sake and since i am used to doing it once a year.

Hopefully i have answered all the questions!

In Form DS230, point # 20, it says :

" List all places where you have lived for at least 6 months since reaching the age 16..."

Is the purpose of this different from that of obtaining PCC?

If not, then should it not be either 12 months here or 6 months in our discussion?

Is the purpose of this different from that of obtaining PCC?
Answer: I woudl like to say that Line 20 of DS230 and PCC are not directly related but indirectly related. Line 20 should include all the places of residence you have lived in USA and India and any other country. PCC is for any country you have lived in for more than 12 months after reaching the age of 16.

If not, then should it not be either 12 months here or 6 months in our discussion?
Answer: PCC is for staying in a country for more than 12 months after the age of 16.
Line 20 DS 230 is for stay in any country for more than 6 months after reaching the age of 16.

They are two different things but in a sense indirectly related.

Sorry, I missed to ask this earlier, but for a foreign country, does 6/12 months mean continuous stay?

For example, stay in Country A for 3 months, then travel to Country B for 2 months, back to A for 5 months, back to B for 1 month.

How would it be in this case?

Here is the exact para from us consulate mumbai web site:
"if the applicant has resided abroad since the age of 16 for periods of six months or more, then a police certificate might be required from that country, depending on which country it was. "

It does not say continuous so i would have to GUESS that more than 6 months stay in totality after reaching 16 years of age would require a PCC of that country.

Best bet is send an email to your consulate and see what they have to say!
