paying attention to other matters now

question7588

First off, thanks to all who responded to some of my earlier posts when I
was waiting for my permanent residency status. Now that chapter is behind me and I am paying attention to other aspects of life, some of which have been on my mind for a while now.

I\'d like to hear from other professionals who might be in my situation. Thoughts from anyone else are welcome too:

Some background first that is essential to understanding my situation. I am a nephrologist (for the unfamiliar: kidney transplantation, kidney diseases and dialysis). Originally from India (look unmistakably like an Indian) but born, raised and trained in Finland with a Finnish wife and mixed-race children. When I visit India, which is every two years or so, people (strangers) on the street uncannily seem to guess my occupation to be a surgeon and I am treated as such. In Finland, the locals appear to perceive me to be a very well-paid executive and I was treated as such.

I have generally been treated well in America too (although I can hardly say the same about my life in Canada). However, here in this all-American state that I recently moved to, which shall remain nameless, people appear to think I work in the janitorial profession. I have often been asked if I am the janitor, most recently by four different people at my church and a couple of individuals at the hospital. There are no other people who look like me working as janitors either at the church or the hospital, so people mistaking me to be a janitor is disturbing and puzzling at the very least. (I never had this experience when I lived in California, Texas, Utah and New Jersey, where most people perceived me to be a successful immigrant speaking with a strange accent). I was never stopped by the police all these years but in this state, I have been stopped seven times in the last four months on a technicality and received six tickets.

I have also been questioned by hospital employees acting as self-appointed security guards when I am on my way to my office (e.g. by stepping right in front of you with a "May I help you!" and a should-I-be-calling-security expression on their face). At the hospitals in TX, CA, UT and NJ, I never had such problems.

What is happening here? Why am I suddenly running into these problems of often being mistaken as a janitor? More importantly, why didn\'t I ever run into this in UT/TX/NJ/CA? Why not in Utah? Thoughts?

Were those questions posted under this same handle question7588?

I couldn\'t see any of those earlier questions. I am going to ask a question myself, do you happen to be one of Vishnu\'s alter egos? (For those not familiar, this comes from the California 485 forum).
Don\'t mean to offend you, but we have had lately a number of first time posters starting discussions intended to stir up racial discussions.

There are too many other things to worry about than our egos.
Statistics would not lie and a significant percentage of people
reading this post will soon get cancer in th enext 10 years.
Others diabetics, heart disease and so on. So being treated like a janitor is really not a big deal.

By the way, what is a Janitor? But whatever it is, a surgeon who
looks down upon a ajnitor is a jerk and vice versa. So far as
I am concern, I hope that I\'ll never have to see a surgeon
in my life.

Jobless Idoit

What a Senseless Idoit? Be happy that you were looked as "Janitor" instead of Crazy Asshole yourself

?

Excuse me! Are you mistaking me for someone else? I have posted a few messages before about physicians and visas, both of which were well received.

What you are saying is pretty unbelievable. With so many MD\'s from India around ( including myself)it is hard to imagine a place where this could happen. Are you sure you are not having a psychotic breakdown and hallucinating ??? I would suggest an appointment with your shrink ASAP. I have known of some paranoid schizophrenics who functioned well enough to become doctors.

the state I\'m in

Um, Joe, thanks. I didn\'t want to mention the name of the state I reside in precisely because people would make inferences about the state being racist. Even if the state is racist, I\'m sure there are thousands of people in this state who are not racist at all, but I probably haven\'t run into them. The term "racism" is a) overused (because it is the first conclusion we jump to) and b) misapplied (it\'s applied exvusively to Whites when minorities are often equally racist). Personally I don\'t like the word racism very much.

Joe, I agree with your point that people in certain states being used to multiethnic environments, which is why I was especially curious about Utah. People in my region in Utah were hardly exposed to minirities but they were wonderful with me. In Finland, I hardly ever saw minorities but I never had any problems.

Could there be some other explanation? I don\'t watch much television, but if Simpsons or some other currently popular serial are presently portraying darker-pigmented individuals as custodians or janitors, then that could be one explanation. Another explanation - could people have become aggressive and security-conscious in their behavior towards minorities after 9/11? Whatever it is, the reason evades me, which is why the issue bothers me so much.

And assuming this is the same guy

He/She is using a different question number each time he/she posts a message, and doing this in the same out of order manner the INS is infamous for :)

Why don\'t you move out

of that state and more importantly out of this board and stop wasting people\'s time? Though of course I must admit that your posts are quite entertaining whoever you are. I guess you do not have anything to do and are just trying to get a kick out of such fictional, made up gobbledegook....

On the other hand I like that you are spending YOUR time writing out such elaborate stories just to entertain us...so why don\'t you hang around to be the "board comic"!!!

Kidney Transplantation

You may want to consult a nephrologist to remove and get your kidneys Sold in a Garage Sale

Agree

I certainly can agree with your situation. I have the same feeling sometimes, living in Utah also.

I think the stereotyping in Movies, TV and media accounts for some of the opinions of the people. Also, for most folks in US, they dont need to be outward looking. That is, all they care and know about is their local community, local issues, what they see and hear on media, and most strongly what their family members or church members tell them.

Another big factor in this whether you are part of mainstream or not. If you are not part of the mainstream, then it is up to the individual to judge based on his/her own knowledge and experience, which is very much lacking for most.

If I were in your shoes, I would consider moving to a much more diverse community, as JOEF suggested to the West or East.

Couldn\'t agree better...

I totally agree with what nebulous said.
Being in a midwestern state myself, I noticed a lot of people who are so ignorant of the outside world. Surprisingly, they are totally unaware of it. Like what Nebulous said in the post above, most of what they know and care is their own little community. I do feel sorry for most of these people for being so shallow.
Even though I (as an oriental) did not get any unfair treatment (as far as I know), but I do see people from other ethnicities being treated unfairly. Darn obvious too, I must say.
You\'re in a free country, if you don\'t like where you\'re at, move on....

relocation but

> You\'re in a free country, if you don\'t like where you\'re at,
> move on....

You have a point there, but unless you live in a place for 5-6 months, you don\'t really get a feel for the place. At least I don\'t. When I first moved here, I thought people were great because they smiled at strangers. Many people are quite nice I\'m sure. But I never dreamt that I would be viewed with suspicion in my own hospital, followed around by security guards at malls, perceived to be the church\'s janitor or stopped by the police for no fault of mine. Suppose I move to Maryland or some such place and later find that I am experiencing the same problems there?
