Passport validity when travelling to India

Does anyone knows what are requirements from Indian Government on US passport validity when traveling to India?

Some countries require passport to be valid for 6 months after your return travel date (from India). Does India has such requirement?

Any official source or link will be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah same thing with India... You should have a minimum of 6 months of validity when you land in India.
Sorry can't remember the exact link, but I saw it on cgisf

From Travisa's website:

Passport: Passport must have a minimum validity of six months from the date of application with at least two blank visa pages. Last 2 amendment pages are not acceptable. Must be the actual passport not a copy because your visa will be stamped in the actual passport.

Thanks cafeconleche .... this says about date of application (for visa) ... my question is for actual travel.
If my passport expires after 6 months ... I can apply for visa but what will happen if after getting visa I wait for a month and then travel to India ... my passport is now valid for only 5 months.

I think in that situation, you have to depart from India before the day your passport expires. Airlines let you fly as long as your passport is valid. But once it's expired. It's a different story.

I called airlines ... they said there is no such requirement and they will let me fly.

I called my travel agent ... she said no you have to have six month valid passport.

when I pointed to above observation from airlines ... she said you ask different people at airlines .... response will be different. if I get lucky and find an agent at counter who doesn't know or system doesn't flag .... I will be good (BTW luck is not my best friend).

What next ... tried to get passport in a day .... guess what first available appointment is in 2 weeks ... made me laugh ... get a passport in a day if you have emergency but wait for 2 weeks before that.

Sent email to consulate ... no reply yet.

Somehow got hold of some one at passport agency (travel.state.gov) over phone ... they were very professional and helpful (unlike Travisa staff) ... they told me do walk in at passport agency even though they work solely with appointment.

Will try to get it in a day .... but if not ... will try my luck at counter.

I don't know what the travel agent is smoking. But again, it's India hum jiske baat kar rahe hain... It'd be the best if you could get a new passport issued. Just carry the old passport on you if it has visa in it.

Yeah you can walk in to a passport agency with proof of immediate travel. That's your best bet. Try calling the Indian consulate too. You will get someone eventually. I was able to in NY. She was helpful.
