Passport stamping done at Detroit INS office

The documents to bring:
  The original approval notices
  2 ADIT photos for each of us.
  Passport (with I-94 )
  all of EAD\'s we have got from INS
  all of AP\'s we have got from INS

Yesterday morning, we arrived at Detroit INS office around 7:30am.
It took us one hour and half to enter the door. Please notice
the highs was 94! So please try to get there as early as possible.
After passing the security checking, we were put in a line. It took
another half hour to get a number.
We waited about 20mins before our number was called. The lady officer
is polite, just OK. She collected all of our I-94, EAD\'s and AP\'s, and put them in a small plastic bag. Then she stapled the bag with our original
approval notice. Next she fingerprinted our index fingers and asked us
to sign our names on a form (front and back).
Finally, she stamped our passports. The whole process (for both of us)
took about 10 minutes. No question was asked. The only question was
asked by me since my latest EAD has an error on it. My lawyer sent the EAD back to INS before we received our approval notice. I asked her if it\'s OK. She said yes.

I recommend not to go this early. Its really useless. Most people in line are not there for I-485 Passport Stamping. I went there on a Friday at 11:00 and I was out at 11:20 AM. The trick is not to stand in line. Show the approval notice to the security guard and he will point you to the window that you need to approach without waiting.

Did you call IIO in the mean time during your process? Please post more details?
 
More about my case

I did not contact INS in NSC at all. The only thing I did was to change my FP schedule from Apr to May (last month!) due to the conflict of my business trip schedule. This is a real case and even my lawyer felt very surprised! Good things do happen! Be patient. Good Luck!
 
CWT, thanks for visiting back and reassuring everybody here.

We have no choice but believe you if you honestly not trying to confuse us. If you were kidding, please say so. There is no advantage of confusing a bunch who are on the same boat.
This still amazes me how this case got approved in 5 months for AOS (and not consular processing)!!
Has your attorney seen any other cases like this? or any other
chinese category or "other" category has more preference? What was your area of work? I am just curious. Also did you have any dependents too or just you? I am just trying to draw a pattern if this makes sense. Can you think of anything that helped move you case
faster?

Honestly speaking, I am amazed the case went through so fast. Most of cases approved in my lawyer\'s office are Mar/Apr/01. He was telling to check with him after new year of 03 two weeks ago! I share the feeling with everyone else here who is a 485 waiter. It will be a big shame to me to post a fake story here.

Here is part of the email message from my lawyer:

"Somehow, your applications skipped past tens of thousands of others waiting
in the queue ahead of you at INS - I have no idea how or why! But
congratulations!"

I did nothing special. My kid is only 11 yrs old. I am working in Seattle area ,WA.

Again, good thing does happen! Please do not give up!!!! Sometimes, lucky is better than smart.

Detroit INS Office

Thanks for the information about the wait in the line, at Detroit office, but if people can stand in queue around 4 a.m. in the morning, outside shopping centers on Thanksgiving Day to get free stuff, or outside Best Buy a day before, to get hands on first Sony Playstations, then this wait of 3-4 hours for green card in the detroit office is justified ......or go at 11:00 a.m., but you cannot stay at home or office on that day and relax.....

My case details:
RD: Dec. 2001
ND: Dec. 2001
FP: May 2002

Looking forward to get my approval letter, like the others.

But by looking at the Rupnet tracker it seems the June - July cases are moving these days......

I am planning to move to a different area within MI in August (no other changes except address), and my attorney has told that you can change your address anytime before you go for stamping, so that there is no delay in getting the actual card. So I will notify NSC about the change in address as soon as I move to the new place.
Now assuming, in the transition period, if they send the approval letter to my old address (the way things are going it is going to take 4-5 months), will it be forwarded to the new address by UPS, or will they send it back to NSC.

Advice , suggestion, comments are welcome.....

Well if you really want to stay in line at 5:00 AM in the morning for 3 to 4 hours its really your choice. Don't tell me it is justified though.

You are still going to be late for work anyway. I didn't stay home all day. I just took a longer lunch hour.

As far as your change of address is concerened, you can do it any time. The INS mail usually doesn't get forwarded.

When you change the address, just call INS a copule of times to make sure that it actually is changed in their system.

They send you the courtesy copies of the approvals though. Your lawyer get the originals. You can still use those for stamping. So in worst scenario, you will not get the copies... big deal. You are pretty safe. Good luck

Thanks for the information.

Do they give you a specific time to visit the office like in FP or you can go anytime? If there is no specific time then according to you, it is better to go around 11:00. I did not mean to say that you wait that much in the queue, but I implied that people wait for that moment so anxiously that they do not want to wait at home. Well with family and kids it is always advisable to go when there is no rush.

Will call NSC and check whether they have changed my address after my move in August.

So should keep a tab on my attorney too for the originals.

They say one of the stage in GC takes time, and I found this to be true. Either of LC, I-140 or 485/CP makes you wait for long.
