I know this is not kinda related to 485 issues. So, sorry about that.

Did any one renew their passports at SFO Indian Consulate? How long does it take? My passport is expiring early Sep this year.

Thankyou.

mango pickle,

I renewed ny PP at SFO consulate. It takes one week if you go in person, and probably a coupple of days more if u do it by mail.

I was impressed by the very smooth process. You can just print out the form from consulate's website. Pay the fee in cash/cashier's cheque and just give the form. They will give you a date and time to pick up the passport. And you just go and pickup.

I have my passport expiry slated for July 2005 and I am a pending I485 applicant. What do you suggest do at present? Do I apply for a new passport and in case the 485 application goes through, get it stamped on the new one or wait for the 485 application to go through?

Thanks

You can not apply beyond 12 month before the passport expiry date. You need to wait till the day of expiry (in July 2004) to get it renewed. It does not harm if you renew it in July and get stamped on new passport (if you received already). But if you get I485 approval before you received your new passport, it's better to get stamped on old passport. Basically I am trying to say that there is no point of delaying stamping for the apprival of your new passport. Sonner you get stamping, sooner you will receive your card. Once you get your plastic card, the stamping is pretty much useless. It really does not matter whether you got it on old passport or new passport.

Hypothetical follow-up question ....

if you get 551 stamping on the old passport, can you go again and get another stamping in the new passport once you get it ? ( assume that the original stamp is still valid ? )

Or do you have to take both the passports when traveling ( like how you do it when you have a valid visa in the old passport ? )

Thanks!

Yes. You need to take both the passports. You are better off stapling the old and new passports together.

"You can not apply beyond 12 month before the passport expiry date. You need to wait till the day of expiry (in July 2004) to get it renewed"

Doesnt that mean the renewal can be done anytime after July2003 ?

I recently got my passport renewed by sending the passports and filled forms via Airborne express. It took about 2-3 weeks in total.

The guy who picks up the phone is not very courteous but if you can have the phone forwarded to the lady who is perhaps the 2nd level of support, she is quite courteous and understanding. I believe her name is Sumanjeet.

In case you have multiple old passports, you will need to send all of them. Good idea to stape and send. I would advice NOT to send any other originals like I-94, etc.

Fee = 55 dollars (40 for the application and 15 for returning of new passport by courier)

See the consulate website. If your passport expires on July 15, 2005. You can apply anytime after 15 July 2004.

My PP was expiring Dec'04. I got it renewed in March 2004 from SFO by mail. Took 10 days.

I sent mine by mail - But it seems that there is no way ( besides the postal receipt) to figure out whether they actually received it and are processing it.
Seems you got to wait 2 weeks to figure out if your passport is all right

I sent my PP by UPS and tracked it online. Opt for return receipt and you will get the signatures of the who receives it at SFO

If you live near SFO I'd say give it in person and pick it up in person. I got it renewed by mail. Sent by FedEx and received by Airborn(DHL). Although the envelope said "do not leave at the door" and "must take signature" the DHL moron left it at my doorstep. No way to really track your passport if you send by mail. Consulate charges $15 for return mail.
