Passport reissue when on tourist visa

My parents are on tourist visa and their passport is expiring and I want to get it renewed while they are here. Has anyone tried passport renewal in US for anyone on tourist visa?

Yeah been there and done that years ago, no issue with renewing a Passport while in a non immigrant status.

Thanks. You renewed while on tourist visa - b2? Was it the NY consulate?

It was in Washington DC and it was done by mail.

Did you have to give any reason etc? I saw on the site that for tourist visa , it might be difficult. Hence these questions.Thanks

I don't think Indian consulates will renew Indian passports of tourists in the US. See note from Indian consulate San Francisco and Indian embassy, Washington DC:
"Note: B1/B2 visa holders are temporary visitors to U.S. and therefore we cannot issue passport to them."

I got passwport renewed by appearing personally at NY consulate office. They just wanted a letter stating reason for extension.
