Automatic Extension of Passport Validity: This list which we posted last year has been updated on 01-16-99, adding Russia.
Either for the purpose of a visa application or for admission into the U.S., the U.S. Immigration Laws requires that an alien carries a passport that is valid for a minimum of 6 months. The U.S. Department of State has released a list of countries that have signed an agreement under which the U.S. government recognizes their passports as valid for the return of the bearer for a period of 6 months beyond the expiration date specified in the passport, thereby effectively extending the validity period of the foreign passport an additional 6 months beyond its expiration date. The countries are:
Algeria, Antigua & Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cote D\'Ivoire, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Grenada, Guinea, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Kuwait, Laos, Lebanon, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua (Diplomatic & official only), Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Senegal, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, Sudan, Suriname, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, Thailand, Togo, Trinidad & Tobago, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Uruguay, and Venezuela, Zimbwabe.
