Passport & Interview Question

I was reading about the interviews and I found a part that says if you pass the interview you receive a stamp in your passport that says you are approved for your green card which gives you permission to work and travel outside of the US.

My question is, what if my husband doesn't have a passport?

He is a Canadian citizen so there was no need for him to have a passport to come to the US. Will they give us a piece of paper or certificate or something instead? I really should stop worrying about these things but I am really trying to get educated and I don't really know where else to turn for answers except our lawyer and I'm sure he doesn't have time to answer every single question I have popping into my head at all hours of the night :p

Thank You

can't he get a passport? all foreigners are usually required to have a passport.

There is no certificate for a GC.

He has to go back to Canada to get a passport.

Canadians do not need a passport to come to US it's a 45 minute drive from his families house in Canada to my house in the US.

Or he could apply for a passport through the consulate. Contact them.

Also, if he does travel to Canada to get a passport. Make sure he gets a Travel Advance Parole document before he leaves (I-131) otherwise his petition will be considered abandoned and he can only travel if he did not overstay for longer than 180 days.

We contacted them via email and were told that he could only gain a temporary through them...

I will make sure to give them a phone call instead.

We won't be going anywhere until the i-131 is in hand.

Yes, your lawyer does have the time to answer every single question that you have. That's what you are paying him for!! ;)

Even lawyers don't deserve someone calling them 3000 times a day lol

I don't want to get annoying over things I could find the answers to w/o the long distance call lol

oh yes if he is the beneficiary, he definitelly does need a passport, it does not mater what country you are from when yoy apply to USCIs for GC based on marriage you will need a passport, and yes if all they have is temporary till the original arrives from canada, then by all means get it.. 'cos he is not a US citizen and is supposed to have a country of residence till he becomes one, and that can only be verified by proff of passport.

Canadian Passport

I have always renewed my passport throught the mail from the US to Canada (actually I use FEDEX).

Use the regular form and include the form that is for "In Lieu of Guarantor", just make sure the photos are up to Canadian Passport Standards....I had a slight shadow by one ear and it was rejected...added one month to the wait.

You can get all the forms and information on the NET from the Canadian Government......

The Canadian consulate told me that they have challenged immigration on the passport issue. I don't have one and I'm canadian, and don't need one for the interview. Period. It's only if you want a stamp. A temporary passport they will not stamp at the interview, it's only for travel purposes and can't be used for the interview stamp etc. My advice would be to apply for his passport through the mail, and hope it gets to you in time so he can get the stamp.
