passport expired while waiting for 485 what to do?

Hi Friends,


My passport expired and I got new passport with different passport numbers, my 485 application is still pending do i need to tell the bcis office about this change.

What i am supposed to do with pending 485 application and renewed passport any suggestions guys/gals

I guess you don't need to do anything. Just send them a copy of the new one when you renew your EAD/AP. That's all.

Make sure you attach the old one below the new one by stapling it since any visas stamped in the old one might still be valid.

Send them your new passport info ASAP. If they notice that your current passport has expired they might send you a RFE.

I doubt whether they'll issue an RFE for an expired passport. Sorry, don't buy that.
 
How to renew passport

My indian passport is expiring soon. Has anyone renewed passport in either NY or washington DC? If yes, any input is appreciated.

I have read somewhere that they need at least six months of passport validity before issuing a VISA. I guessed the same will be applied to GC.

don't worry. My case was exactly similar. My passport (from India) expired last year july. I applied and got a new passport (new booklet, new number). At that time my I-485 was pending. I didn't have to inform anyone regarding this.
Only while getting my GC approval stamp (I-551 stamp), I took 2 passports with me becoz the I-94 was in the old passport and the GC stamp has to be in the new passport.
To be on the safe side, when u travel abroad, carry both the passports, but apart from that you don't need to worry.
Don't inform BCIS unless they ask about your passport via RFE or something else.

DA, I renewed my passport in Indian consulate NYC. I downloaded the application forms from their website, took pictures and went in person to their office in NYC. I got back my old passport and the new passport same day around 5 PM. If you reach before 11 AM u'll get it back on the same day afternoon.
You can also mail your application to them.
 
I have old and re-newed one. On 3/2/04, I went Newark CIS for IEAD (they call it WORK CARD), I gave both of my passports when they asked for verification. They checked both PPs, checked I94 (her print out had my I94 number) which was pinned on older passport. Issued a temporary work card valid for 240days.
( I have a name discrepancy in between PPs, names are swapped, but I did mention that in their EAD application, other name used field)

As long as you give them both the PP when asked, they know where and what to look for.

I would say nothing to worry for, check with your attorney if you would like to.

I am sure, they will update their records with your PP info when you stamp you PP on you 485 approvals.
 
I had renewed my passport by sending the application forms via regular mail to CGNY. They sent me the old and new passports within 10 days. They're pretty quick. This was a few years back though. I don't what the latest processing times are. If you call them they're pretty courteous and will give you the required information.
