Passport Expiration Date

My son's Canadian passport is going to expire in Nov, 2021 which is valid for less than 2 years. Do you foresee any problems if I apply TD visa for him now and apply for 3-year TD visa? I am not sure if I should renew his Canadian passport first or try to apply TD visa at POE now with current passport.

Thank you very much in advance for your help again.

Best Regards,
Josh

Apply for TD status for your child now at POE. Bring original long form birth certificate, showing names of both parents, assuming your child was born in Canada, to show he is your son.
They will issue TD status until expiry of your TN or expiry of your child passport, which ever comes sooner. If your son's passport expires Nov 2021, which is sooner than your TN expiry, the TD status will be valid till Nov 2021. Six months prior to Nov 2021, ie, May 2021, apply for a new Canadian passport for your son, apply by mail from US, ensure the Photos meet the Canadian passport requirements (50 x 70mm, rather than US passport requirements of 2" x 2"). Once your son has a new passport, apply again at POE and they will issue new TD status until the expiry of your TN status.

If you try to obtain new passport for your son now, they will likely not renew as he still has over one year before expiry. You can try in person and see if they will issue a new passport to your son. You need a valid reason to renew before one year of expiry. They may not consider this a valid reason.

Thank you very much for your reply with all the details and clear instructions. This is very helpful. Have a great days! Josh

As one who renewed Cdn passports 8 times while in US, it is much better, simpler, and in many cases cheaper, to just do it when in Canada for a week, in your case, any time in 2021. Pay for expedited service at the passport office on the day you arrive in Canada, with a photo taken at a local photo place (so no worries about quality), this will be less than paying for courier service, possible denial of photo (and paying for re-send), and waiting 6 weeks. Did the mail-in thing 3 times, with various poor success, and finally used the method above for the next 12 years with NO problem.
