Parents passport renewal question in India

Hi,

My parents passport expire in Jan 2010.
They are planing to visit US and had to go the US Consulate in Mumbai. Previously they visited US twice and returned on time. Now they have to apply for US VISA as the VISA is expired. They are planing to come to US in Jun 2009 and return in Dec 2009.

Few questions :

• Do they have to renew passport before taking VISA appointment ?
• If they apply for renewal how long will it take in India ?
• If they don't renew and go for VISA appointment, will that affect their VISA issue and period of issue ?
• Can we request the consular that will be renewing their passport in US as soon as they come here ?
