Parents B2 Visa Interview - 4th Jan
VO approved the visa after 3-4 questions, no papers seen other than passport and DS-160. I am sponsering their trip
Passport taken, no colored form given.

On not recieving passport for a week, on enquiry, learnt that father's application is not yet approved and is in administrative processing.

Failed to get anything from VFS, they don't know anything. No way to contact Delhi embassy directly.

Any idea folks ??
1. They are holding up my mother's application as dependant to father's application admin processing results. Seems odd for B2 visa

2. DoS said someone raised "RED FLAG", what does that mean - is it security check or something else ?? my parents both work in same small scale private ppartner firm and each of them earns just less than 10k per month. Though my father has other siurces of income which is way more than his salary but VO never asked about all those things in interview. Can they raise questions on less salary after approving it in interview ??

3. How long does a tourist visa administrative processing tentatively takes?

4. Someone suggested to me that since no reason is given, consulate might be doing background verification within India like at parents job or work on its own or thru their own agencies.

Appreciate suggestions from more experienced folks out here ...

No you are not, you just think you are.

I am sponsering their trip

A1: Fairly common practice at certain US consulates
A2: Anything can raise a "red flag". It may have absolutely no connection to your father's salary.
A3: I have seen cases where it took close to 9 months.
A4: Most likely the consulate is waiting on some federal agency in DC.

Supporting documents by Parents

Fundamentally your parents have to prove that they have enough ties in the home country back at home. Some of the ways that can be done is by good supporting documentation. Sample list of documents may include.

*
o Notarized documents of all your property.
o Bank Statements
o Pension / employment benefits letters
o Fixed deposits, any financial related documents.
o If there are Tax returns, then take them
o Any other documents that shows your financially strong and you will come back.

If you have not enough documents or property back home, it is OK. No big deal. Because, you are the one in US, who is sponsoring the visitor visa for your parents. So, do not worry. Also, if your parents are older, then they are fine.

Hi michaelcarter

Thanks for your info, my parents took all these and probably more documents to the interview but the VO did not ask for anything and just said approved after taking DS-160 and few random basic questions, none of my docs were asked even like invite letter, i-134 etc or my statements, ......

All my efforts so far in getting any info from DOS have been fruitless (am now scared if my calling too much to DoS can also hurt), guess all they say is all they know is it is in AP and with consulate,

I have got tired of thinking what it can be - can they now put 214(b) after originally approving it or if it was some sort of federal agency clearance then DoS would have known .....
pretty much giving hope now

It's been more than 5 weeks, by the way my parents are 52 years old ...

If there is a refusal now, it will most likely be not based on 214(b). It will porbably be based on security grounds. Mind you, this is assuming there will be a denial. It is more likely that once all federal agencies give them the all okay, your parents will be issued visit visas.

Thanks Triple Citizen

I am reading in bunch of forums that it does matter in figuring out the kind of inspection being carried out - if the case is with DOS or if it is with Consulate ...

seems like what I interacted with DOS is that case is still with consulate ... read in some forum that security check means - case being with DOS

Consulates are part of DOS.
I am very confident is stating that most (not all) lengthy delays occur when consulate/DOS are waiting on other federal agencies to give the all clear to the applicant.

Called up DOS today and guessing I was speaking to someone who was willing to spend more than a min.

He explained - For this case, DOS doesn't have access to know what kind of investigation Consulate is doing (he though mentioned that even if he would have known he wouldn't have told as the info isn't meant for public)

I am not surprised at all. Consulates also conduct local investigations using local personnel. DOS and/or DHS may be totally unaware of what exactly is being done on the ground.

Thanks TripleCitizen, by local investigation, I guess you mean some background/employment check in India itself.

Can it be an assumption then that case is not in any security check with federal since DOS doesn't know anything about it.

Yes

No, you cannot assume that either.

Can it be an assumption then that case is not in any security check with federal since DOS doesn't know anything about it.

Waiting for any visa can be stressful, but try to relax. Stressing out will do you no good since there is nothing that you can do about it. I once had to wait 22 months for a visa. It was tough, but I had no choice :)

22 months!! phew .....

just for my curiosity sake - what if someone has a change in his information in such a big time frame, how are you supposed to inform US embassy about it ? Are we supposed to proactively inform in first place ...

more and more I hear about these things, I tend to drop any distinct thoughts of visiting India as I also would need to have a re-stamping

I was not stone walled by the US :)

Regardless, no harm in being proactive.

Parents received their stamped passports today after 2 days less than 2 months. It is valid for 10 years.

Thanks Triple Citizen for answering all sorts of questions from me in that time ... you helped a lot ...

I am having same issues

My parents went in for interview on 29th Jan 2013

1. VO asked some simple question & told them "You visa is approved & you will get it in 2-3 days"

2. My mother got her passport with B2 approved next day

3. But for my father it status shows "Administrative Processing"

4. My mother is dependent on my father who is govt employee. Is this the reason of holding visa.

I tried to call travledocs but they have no idea on the status.

Are they going to contact my father or should we contact them for status?
Do you suggest contacting consulate will help or I should just wait ?

Firstly, you should have started your own thread rather than hijack someone else's.
Secondly, your approach should be to wait until contacted by the consulate.
