My friend got his green card from his wife who now USC. They went back to their country(with kid-USC). For some reason which I do not know because this is my friend story. Anyway, they are not able to come back to the US a year or so. What can he do because he did not apply RP before he left the US. Now, it's been almost 3 months that he left the US. He's not intend to return his GC.

Somehow they need to find a way to return to the US before the 1 year is up, even if it's just for a day. If the mainland US is too far, they don't need to return to the mainland US, they can go to Hawaii or a US possession like Guam.

If they don't return before 12 months, they'll have to apply for a Returning Resident Visa (SB-1) at a consulate. They can only apply for it after the 12 months (if they apply before that, they'll be told to just use the GC itself to return, because the SB-1 is not needed if they've spent less than a year outside the US). If it is denied, their green card will be dead. So it is really a last resort.
