Out of Status!

A friend of mine, came into the US on an F1 visa and since the last 12 months, he has been out of status. INS has given time till
June, 02 for him to leave the country. (They got to know about his status recently while travelling on a greyhound bus).

If he gets married to a US citizen, will he have trouble getting a GC. I heard there\'s a rule that says, that if a person is out of status on a temporary visa for more than 180 days, then they will reject his GC, when he applies for it.

He will have to leave US anyway. If he is out of status >180 days, he may need extra help, probably a waiver.
There is good chance if he gets married to a citizen that he will eventually get GC with some delay (don\'t know how much, I know someone in similar situation back in 1988 that got GC after ~3 months out of US).

Actually when I was a student, I travelled to San Diego to visit my uncle. I remember the checkpoint, but my uncle asked me to bring my passport along with me.

These check points and random checks have become frequent. I have made a copy of green card and have kept in my purse even when I travel to and fro from my work. I intend to carry my orginal GC for domestic travel.
