Ottawa - H1 Stamping August 4th

All,
I am renewing my visa at Ottawa on Aug 4th. I am planning to stay in a hotel near downtown. IN the morning do we need to vacate the hotel before we go to the Embassy. I have appointment at 9.30 AM. If we vacate in the morning , is there any place you can store your baggage while you are in Embassy (I am going alone). And also can some clarify about passports are given only the next day.

Depends on your hotel. Usually the checkout time is 11AM. In ottawa the passport are returned on the next day. So, if you are planning to stay somewhere else for the night, you can ask the hotel to keep your bags while you go for the appt.
 
Is this a new policy? I have heard that in Ottawa, they return the passport by 3 PM the same day and you would be done with everything by max 5 PM. Could somebody please let me know the details on this, I have my appointment on the 17th, and have to make travel arrangements accordingly.

Again...any help on the Canadian visa needed for this stamping? Do we need one, what is the process?
