I accompanied my cousin to her N400 interview yesterday afternoon. I was only allowed to wait in the waiting room. I noticed that almost all the applicants, men and female, all dressed in a very casual way. (e.g. polo shirt,
jeans, docker pants, sneakers, baseball hats) Except one elderly lady who was in an old-lady floral dress.(who turned out to be from Canada) There was an immigration attorney who came with his client. The attorney wore a blue shirt with no ties and black trousers.

The interview officers who came out to get the applicant were also dressed very casually. The male ones only had a regular short-sleeve shirt, no ties and casual pants/jeans. One lady IO did wear a pant-suit, which made her
look like Sen. Clinton's twin.

I was originally planning to wear my best business suit to my own interview not too far off in the future. Now I'm now so sure if that will make me stand out too much... ?

i'd rather look over the top than unprofessional. i am a woman, so i won't be wearing a tie, but for sure a white shirt and black pants (business) and flat shoes. my interview in on thursday in baltimore. i really don't care if others don't get dressed, but this is a government agency and it is supposed to be formal, whether the IOs follow that or not.
So, my suggestion to you is wear a shirt and business pants, no tie or jacket, unless weather permits wearing a jacket.

When I went for my Interview I have to say everyone in the room and everyone who came out of the IO's Section whether it was an IO or an Applicant were really nicely dressed. Men in ties and women in nice dresses. I don't think you do any harm going casually or in a buisness suit. As long as you don't wear sneakers and stuff.

There is no reason to go over the top. It's best to wear something that makes you feel comfortable and at ease, both by fit and by appearance.
