Options for Affidavit of support sponsor if my future wife is a student and does not have an income

Hi,

I am under an F-1 student VISA (studying Ph.D in STEM field and my status ends on 2017), me and my U.S citizen girlfriend are planning on getting married this summer and applying for adjustment of status.

However, she is a student too and does not have a fixed income (only works part time on summers). Does the co-sponsor needs to live in the same household? or same address than us? Her father has agreed to be my sponsor but he lives in a different city (and house) than us. We are already living together in the city were we study. Does the sponsor needs to live in the same household?

Which form would he fill? I-864 or I-864A? We are trying to do all by ourselves due to short income, but we are reading books, forms, and the official USCIS website, we are also planning on going later to the infopass appointments.

Her father can be a joint sponsor, but not the sole sponsor (your spouse must always be a sponsor). A joint sponsor needs to live in the USA and be a US citizen or permanent resident (and of course satisfy the minimum income requirements for sponsorship).

Thanks for replying Harry. Does it mean even if she does not have a permanent job she can fill the I-864?
 
The sponsoring US citizen must fill out I-864 no matter what. There is a question on the I-864 form that asks your current job status. If you are unemployed, answer "unemployed" for this question. On the I-864 form there is a place to add additional income and/or assets from joint sponsors. Those joint sponsors need to fill out I-864A.
