Optional Practical Training and H-1 Filing

Hi,

I am currently a student on F-1 Visa. I got a job in
January. I will be completing my course requirements
in May with the thesis defense remaining. I applied
for my OPT in the third week of March and requested
the OPT to begin May 2nd. My employer filed for my
H-1B visa in the first week of April. Currently, my
OPT request is still pending, while my H-1 application
has been approved. However the H-1 visa is valid
effective October 1st.

My International Students Office told me that since my
H-1B has been approved my OPT will be most likely
denied. I do not understand this since my H-1B is
valid only from October 1st.

Kindly let me know your opinion. Do you think there is
any reason for my OPT to be denied?

Thanks for your time.

I think they are wrong. OPT should be approved. Let me know if it is not.
