OPT and grace period

Hallo guys,

I am an H-1. My wife is graduating on May 19th. She would like to set her OPT starting date on July 10th (that is, use her Grace Period to stay in USA). Is this safe?

If her OPT gets dennied (I know such chance is slim but anything can happen these days), can she apply H-4 or she has to leave immediately?

yes. but it is better not to use grace period, even if it is allowed.

I would suggest your wife to apply for her OPT now itself with a start date on July 10th. Don't wait until May 19 because USCIS takes 90 days usually to process OPT. I would advise her to meet International Students Services or Advisor at her school immediately.
