Opportunity overseas - just filing N400

Gurus of the forum,
I have been a permanent resident for 5 yrs & 7 months now. I plan to mail my (& wife) N400 in a few days.

In the mean time, there's a good promotional opportunity within my company in India, and I am likely to be considered. Given the economy, the job might pay in Indian Rupees (not expat). Nevertheless its a good opportunity. The opportunity would last for 2~3 yrs and then I can come back here (if I want to).

I live in the raleigh area, and going by some recent comments/posts, it looks like the naturalization process takes 3~4 months? I want to get the US passport before I take this job, and then get an OCI in India once I get there (which I think I need to get paid in Rupees).

Does it make sense to pursue this opportunity with a pending N400? I expect the hiring process to take 2-3 months. Am I missing something?

You have to retain continuous residence until your oath. Starting N-400 process and then moving to India to take a job with a non US company can be seen as a break in continous residence and could lead to a denial.
If the position is with a US company, determine if they can file N-470 for you to preserve continuous residence.

Pursuing the opportunity is not a problem with a little give and take. Naturalization takes 3-4 months right ... but you need to plan for the case if things do not go per schedule. At the same time, as you said the hiring process will take 2-3 months, if you can move this a couple of months, or take up an offer based on a contingent basis, you should be fine.

Couple of quick comments:
a) OCI from India might take longer than from US ... filing at MHA might be faster amongst India FRROs. Filing from San Francisco seems to be the fastest - although past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
b) Why are you waiting a few days? If your file is clean, file today. I mean, obviously you need time to collate data (trips etc.), but if your calculations are right, you should not be wasting a single day.

And yes, you need to meet residency requirements until oath.

Thanks guys for the response.

1) Bobsmyth, Yes the company is US based, and the opportunity is within the company but based in India. N470 is a good idea, I'll bring it up if this goes anywhere.
2) SanJo...20, I hope to apply tomorrow. Got everything ready.

On a different note, I am a bit confused about benefits (401K, Pension plan etc) if the job pays in INR. So the benefits would stop when I leave, and start back up whenever I get back here? Sound right?

It depends on
#1. if your company does this.
#2. how do you negotiate with them.

Ask your company. If they are paying you in INR, is it the same comparative to your US salary? If not they are taking advantage of you.
