Though offtrack, to set things straight.

I hear over and over Idli and Sambhar smell.

First of all, Idli is made of rice with no spices. Hence, it does not really smell compared to other food (including breads, sandwiches, etc.)

Sambhar is made of lentils and has very little spices and it does not emanate strong smells like other spicy Indian/Chinese food. Actually smells lesser than beef, fish dishes, etc.

Most of the time Indian food smells arise because of mixed rice dishes (pulao, veg. rice, etc.) and the side dishes. And these are not limited to "southies" but all Indians.

For most people complaining about food smells, what is the big deal if it is in the pantry or cafeteria (hello, that is where one is supposed to eat!). As long as someone does not eat at their desk/office/cubicle and leave a lingering smell, it is OK.

Chill out! The world is exciting because of the diversity. :D :D :D

Hehehe... actually in my office, people (even the americans) complain about the smell of butter-flavored popcorns.
So now they moved the microwave to the end of the hall, closer to the exhaust :D
