Okay to use B1/B2? Or VWP?

Just wanted to make sure of things so I don't get any rude surprises ....

I have a B1/B2 issued last year in Australia - valid for 5 years. I was in the US for 5 months from Nov 2011 to Apr 2012. I've been living in Canada since then (we moved here in April). I'm an Australian citizen & Canadian PR. I plan to use my B1/B2 for another extended visit to the US in early January 2013.

On a whim we decided to take a last-minute cruise to Alaska for a week. So my question is: do I enter the US on my B1/B2 visa, or should I get an ESTA and enter on a VWP saving the B1/B2 for my longer trip later?

My confusion lies with how the maximum 6 months per year is calculated. If I use it on my cruise this week, does the clock start ticking and is only valid until March 2013? Or do they just add up the two trips and as long as it's under 6 months per year it's okay? And is it by calendar year? Or from the first time I entered last year in November?

Hopefully somebody will make sense of this? Thanks!

Use VWP, if it will be a week long trip only.

No genuine visitor to the US should spend more than 6 months in the US during any rolling 12 month window.
