OCI - Family is gone to India for Visit

Hi,

My Family has gone to India for visit (for 3 long months of vacation) whereas we all have received the OCI ready mail and need to send the passports for stamping. Is there a problem to get their US passports by courier to me that I can submit for OCI stamping?

Please help on what are my options?

Thanx for all your responses. But my family was also debating of continuing to stay in India (for personal issues) for a year or more and forgo the current return flight ticket, and I will join them few months from now. If that happens then I will have to get an Entry visa, rather than getting an OCI stamp and in few years when we come, we will have to stamp our OCI in India.

But instead of waiting, Can i just get the passports and get the OCI stamp once and for all of us by going to US consulate in NY. Would embassy create a problem since the passport will have a Port of entry stamp but not an exit stamp on passport.

Appreciate your help.
 
Sending US passports from India to US and back to India is a big risk. Loss of passports are trouble and your family will have to go through this huge issue.

Moreover your family's entry into India is recorded as a tourist, not OCI. They will get into trouble (i.e. registration after 180 days) if Indian immigration authorities are not properly informed of their OCI status.

May be there is a way they can get them in India and you here. You go here in USA to pick up the OCI and U Sticker - hope they will allow to pickup part of the family as I have read on this forum that part of the family approved etc., with different tracking for documents (even when applied together). Once you get yours, may be you can ask the Consulate folks about your family - maybe there is a way they can send the documents to the nearest office...

May be they can reapply in India too - I think this is definitely possible.
