OCI - Any Downsides?

What, if any, are the negatives/downsides of registering as an OCI? I am not referring to the obvious ones listed in the Sticky but rather some situations that are idiosyncratic to the Indian environment. Some examples:

  • Is the OCI information of an individual shared with the local police HQ? If so, have there been cases of harassment or extortion of an OCI or is there a possibility of such a thing happening?
  • Will OCIs have to pay foreign tariffs at hotels and tourist attractions?

All responses are appreciated. Thanks.

Havent heard of something like this. However, possibilities in such idiosyncratic cases are hard to predict. There is risk in everything in life :)

.

Good question, lets see if some folks here have an answer.

    ---------------------------no

---------------------oci or citizen the indian police can harass and you know the indian police. Just because of you being oci is not the reason for harassment. Who looks at your passport? Thousands of benladeshi are illegally staying and working in india .
  • will ocis have to pay foreign tariffs at hotels and tourist attractions?
--------------------no. Just get your pan card (use it as id) and keep that as id with you. Nobody asks your passport or citizenship. If you have indian driving licence then you that as id. (fyi one can get indian dl for 500 to 1000 rupees from any city/village in india, agent will take money and will give you your dl) if you have voter card that you did not cancell then that is also id.
All responses are appreciated. Thanks.
