Obtaining an SSN

I have today received my "Welcome to the United States of America" letter, it has granted me an initial 2 year conditional green card following my marriage to a US citizen in Sept 2007.

Now I have been reading threads stating that there is a delay in the production of the green cards due to new printers and such like.

My question is am I able to obtain a Social Security Number on the strength of this letter or do i actually have to wait until the physical green card is my hand before applying ?????

Do you have an I-551 stamp is your passport? If you do, that should be enough for the SSA office.

Unfortunately my EAD never actually came through, I looked at getting an info pass appointment but my actual GC interview was only 1 month away so I did not bother chasing it up.

I would like to get my SSN sorted though so that I can start work.

I thought I may be able to apply as the Immigration Officer actually stated I could travel overseas with just my approval letter and advance parole as upon entry the officials will see in the system my GC has been approved and is in production.

I was hoping the same would be applicable for obtaining an SSN.

EDIT - Actually on reflection he stated i must obtain a stamp in my passport before traveling. Is this the I-551 stamp ?
