As you can note below, I sent a cover letter, my US passport, pictures, OCI application, certified checks ($275+$20) other related documents and my old indian passport to the NYCGI on May 19th. I had included a stamped, self addressed envelope to have my cancelled Indian Passport returned.
I did not see an acknowledgement on the online inquiry for 3 weeks. Numerous emails (including one to the Counsel general) and phone calls inquiring the status of the cancelled Indian passport did not elicit any response. The email to the counsel general was however forwarded to the OCI dept though no subsequent responses were forthcoming.
Finally the application was acknowledged and subsequently it was approved, printed and documents received at the NYCGI (exact dates below).
I sent my US passport and another letter requesting the return of my Indian passport.
A week later the US passport was returned to me along with the Visa stamp + OCI card.
A day or two after that my cancelled Indian passport was returned in the pre-paid, self addressed envelope that I had originally sent !!
I am actually more geeked out about my returned Indian passport. Carries a lot of memories.
