I did not send a request to get e-mail notification of case status. Will I receive notification by regular mail when USCIS receives my forms? Any help is appreciated.
I'm not sure if they will notify you by mail upon receiving your documents but you can call them to check the status of your application at 800-375-5283. They can tell you if it was received.

Once you receive a receipt number, you can also register online and receive email/text updates on your case whenever there is a change in your status.

Yes, of course, this is a standard and required procedure for N-400 and for (almost) all other USCIS applications: once they receive your application and properly log it, they will mail you an official receipt notice with the specific case/receipt number assigned to your application. You can then use this receipt number to track the progress of the application.
The receipt notice usually arrives within 2-3 weeks of having mailed in the application, but occasionally it takes a little longer.
If you used a personal check (rather than a money order) for the application fee sent with your application, you can contact your bank and see if the USCIS has cashed your check. Sometimes, although not always, they cash the check faster than mailing the receipt notice.
