Not registering for Selective Service question

I was just wondering. From the posts i have read if you were an undocumented immingrant in the US between the ages of 18 and 26 you were still required to register. Ive been undocumented since i was 13 and recently i recieved my GC. im 30 yes old now. Never registered for SS, just recently found out what it even is. I have an interview for a job at the post office and they require my SS registration card which i dont have. Spoke to the Selective service agent, explained that never had an idea that selective service registration is required, checked my application for employment from INS from 2001 and nothing was on it indicating that i had to register. The man said that my reason 'sounds' valid and they will send me a letter stating that i have not registered and not registering was unintentional or something and he said by law if the reason is valid the interviewing agent cannot deny me the job based on that fact as long as i provide the letter from SS. Just wanted to know if thats true and if anyone came across somethign like that? BTW, since i didnt register, would it have anny effect in me getting a job in law enforcement such as police or any other agency? Thanx folks your feedback is much appreciated.

did u check on their website if ur registered or not? i thought i wasnt but when i posted on this forum about this everyone advised me to make sure of it and when i did, it showed my being registered i asked them how i was so and they said it was forwarded from the dmv. I was unaware of that on the DL application forum there is a fine print about our willingness for SS. I was advised that if i havnt registered i was fine if i was applying for citizenship past my 31st birthday. please double check on the website.

good luck

Yes i have checked and i am not registered. I couldnt have been registered through DMV as i couldnt get a license because i was undocumented. My lawyer informed me that getting the citizenship should not be a big problem but shes not sure about getting a job within the government and thats what i really want to know. Would getting a job like in police department be a problem if you arent registered? Spoke to the Selective service guy and he told me that they send me some sort of letter but do i have to provide to them anything in writing to explain my case?

Almost all police departments require you to be a US citizen (except for some behind-the-scenes jobs). So you still can't go there for now.

Selective Service can give you a letter saying that they never notified you of the need to register. I don't think you need to give them any special explanation.

For citizenship you won't have a problem with this, because once you past 31 (i.e. 5 years after the last chance to register) they don't hold it against you. And obviously you will be over 31 when you apply for citizenship.

Well, im not thinking about a police job for now because i know that i still have around 3 years before i go for the citizenship but i have an interview to work in the post office and i wanted to know whether there is even a point in going for it if i cant get the job cause of the selective service thing. Different people told me that SS will send me a letter saying that they did send me a notice but i failed to register and then it falls on me to prove to them that i have not registered intentionally. Dont remeber getting any notices form them and the process time for the selective service letter is 155 days. My interview is on feb 17th so if anyone knows if there is even a point in going i would appreciate the feedback. Ive started thinking and got 2 letters from a social services intership i work at, the director stated that most undocumented immigrants are unaware that they need to register, my supervisor also made out a letter to that fact. I also went to my college and got a letter from financial aid saying that i have never applied for federal aid therefore i would not know of a selective service requirement. Lastly i went to the super in my building and had him sign a letter that sometimes post office people stuff letters into wrong boxes and its feasable that i never recieved such notice which is all true because its happening quite often in my building. I figure i could bring those letters to the job interview to support my claim but would love to know what you guys think. thanx a bunch

Applicants Over 31 Years of Age

Failure to register for Selective Service will generally not prevent a man who was over 31 years of age on the day he filed his naturalization application from demonstrating that he is eligible for naturalization. Even if the applicant was required to register and the applicant's failure to register was knowing and willful, the failure occurred outside of the statutory period during which the applicant is required to establish his attachment to the good order and happiness of the United States. The INS may, of course, consider a person's conduct before the beginning of this period. INA § 101(f) (last sentence) and § 316(e). If the INS denies naturalization to a man who is at least 31, based on his failure to register with Selective Service, the decision must state explicitly the basis for finding that the failure to register warrants denial of naturalization. As a practical matter, a male applicant over 31 years of age who failed to register with Selective Service should, ordinarily, be found eligible for naturalization unless INS has other evidence, in addition to the past failure to register, that demonstrates that the applicant is not well disposed to the good order and happiness of the United States.

No one has any ideas?
We already said you won't have a problem with citizenship (as far as Selective Service registration is concerned), because you will be over 31 when you apply.

You might have a problem getting certain government jobs due to the lack of Selective Service registration, but that is not an immigration issue, so here is not a good place to ask about that.

Over 31?

I am 31 years old now. And I also had no idea about the registration to SS until now.
Since i had an overstayed student visa while i was under 26, apparently i was supposed to register, and i had no idea about it. Technically i am eligible to file for naturalization in few months and I am worried if this thing will be an obstacle. Does the above statement apply to those 32 and over or 31 and over?
thanks

For naturalization, the immediate 5 years past time window into the applicant's past matters. Male immigrant/residents between 18 and 25 are required to register only. So once you turn 26 + 5 = 31, you're clear

The last date to register for Selective Service is your 26th birthday.

What immigration status did you have when you were 25 until your 26th birthday? If you had a green card, they should have automatically registered you as part of the green card process. If you had a nonimmigrant status such as F1 or H1B, you were not required to register.
