This is just my two cents. I don't think being a desi makes a difference moving up the ladder in a company. In my experience, if you are motivated enough getting what you want, you get it at the end. The only catch of this is, you have to be "the" motivated one as no one will drop anything on your lap.

On the raise issue, well, once again, there are people who accepts what ever raise they are given, and there are ones who know the stats on their field and try to negotiate on it. If they get it, they are satisfied, if not, they look for better opportunity.

The economy is bad I agree. However, there is always opportunity available.

Anyway...that was just my two cents.
