Hello,

I am trying to help our aunt who cannot read, write and speak in english apply for her citizenship. She has been in the United States for the last 4 years and 9 months on her Green Card. She came to USA on her green card and is 65 years old. I spoke to couple of immigration attorneys and they said it is not possible to apply for her unless she speaks english. We tried, and at this age she doesnot have the aptitude to learn english.

Any help in obtaining US Citizenship for her is appreciated.

Regards,

Ask your aunt goes to some naturalization class before or after she filed the N-400

Classes are a good idea. Often churches and other community org's have ESL and citizenship prep classes. My mother used to teach such classes 30 years ago. They were held in a Baptist church, sponsored by the county Baptist association. Anybody could come, no matter what religion.

Call around and ask at some churches in your area.

Even if she doesnt' learn very well, she will meet some friends and the classes are usually free.

Does your aunt work? Sometimes just forcing yourself to get out of the home and mix with people is all it takes.

Thankyou for all your suggestions !!

Tried teaching her english. Due to her age, it has been very diificult for her to learn english.
I read some place that if a psychiatrist gives a letter saying that she has learning disability then she can get a waiver for the english test. Can someone validate that ? If that is true what should be the format of the letter and what other fomrs need to be submitted along with the N400 ?

Thanks a lot,
