Guys,
My NJ license is expiring based on expiry of H1B which is APril 1st. I am on 485 queue with work permit. What documents do i need to go to Wayne center to get my license renewed? Do i need all the docs in original? Let me know

those guys will not understand . take all original documents.

they may give you a renewal till the date of your EAD expiry.

They made a big issue for me on howcome I have both H1-B and EAD.

we had lot of arguments had everyone in the center involved and spent 4 hours to get a licence for just 11 months.

You need to meet thier new 6 point program. Take EAD, Passport with valid I-94, SSN, Current Driver's License, Copy of your Electricty bill for address verification. They'll issue the license till the date of your EAD expiry.

This was informative. I have to go through this routine to get it renewed just for 9 months. Hope i can charm my way through some fat lazy lady out there.
 
Is this the same situation in NY too ?

I need to take all the docs metioned above posts and I get it renewed or new one for the time my EAD is valid or it's a little bit different ..... in terms of renewal or issue of license for nearly 3 years without cosidering the validity of EAD ?

Please let me know .... I've recently moved from OH to NY and need to change the license from OH to NY .....
 
Why don't you opt for renewal of License by post...??
Instead going to DMV and getting harassed...
of course you will get a Non photo ID by post and it is valid
for 4 years.

Go with originals. Please post your experience after your renewal is done.

I have to go there for renewal myself, EAD got approved recently, my DL is valid till April end.
 
I agree with delux007, best option would be to renew it by mail for a non-photo ID. Whenever a photo-id is required either use the old DL with photo or show something else such as passport may be. Finally last Saturday I got my wife's renewed until July. Not to scare you or anything like that, but if you prefer for photo-id be prepared to spend at least 4 hours + harrassment. Those idiots don't understand the concept of EAD, for that matter anything related to Immigration.

Is it possible to have both photo and nonphoto DL? What I am thinking is to get the non-photo ID for now by mail and then later if I have time then go to DMV and get the with photo DL as well. I want to continue have both the IDs valid because that way I don't have to worry about getting a new DL every year to be able to drive.

Do you know if they allow only one DL (photo or non-photo) at any given point of time or can we have both?

I think this is very good idea - DL by mail. I DEFINITELY don't want to go thru that hell EVER again. I don't care if it's a non-picture ID, I can use my EAD card for that.

Does anybody know what's the procedure for that? What documents (copies?) do I need to send them?

When I received renewal notice, if I remeber correctly in the application there was an option to get non-photo. The letter said you can apply by mail if you prefer non-photo.

I think they currently give DL against EAD which normally comes with a year validity. There is no need for any negotiations if the validity is only for a year. Yes, we should demand for a regular DL for people in AOS stage.

They send a non-photo DL renewal form 60 days before your current DL expires. My DL is valid till April, 04 and I got the renewal form in mail, I think in the 2nd week of Feb. I am planning to get a non-photo DL by mail.
 
Normally DMV will send a form by post ..atleast 2 months before
the License expired date.
Non-photo DL by mail would be the best option
to avoid NJ DMV HARRASMENTS...
You can have peace of mind for next 4 years.
 
Online renewal may not work in some cases

At the DMV in Wayne (Regional DMV) the upper level has the immigration office wherein you have to go and register if you are on a visa and require to renew your driver's license. Last year since my license was about to expire, i ignored the non-photo id renewal thru mail and went to wayne to update my information and then get the photo license. Now in their database there is flag that says im not a citizen, hence now since my renewal is due, they did not sent me any forms for non-photo ID. So for all you guys who have not updated the immigration system at the DMV, renewal through mail should be OK. For everyone else, DMV is awaiting you.

I have been to wayne and returned twice because the line was too long by the time I got there and they would not be able to process all the applicants by closing time. Those guys were rude.

If you have the option of non-photo id. Defenitely go for it. After you get it you could probably go to a non regional office to combine the photo and non-photo id. It might work. They would not know your immigration status and just might do it. If they dont wait till you get your GC before you convert to a photo id.

If you have to go, prefer Eatontown to Wayne anyday. I went there around 9:30 on a weekday morning and was done with my renewal in about 20 mins flat.

Till now my understanding from this discussions is that we will get DL till the valid date of EAD. For ex: If your EAD expires in May , you will get DL till May and not one year...

I guess my only option is to go to DMV as I did register there as a non-sitizen...
 
Crazy DMV

I was not able to go to DMV this morning as i had to attend important meetings at work. I just received a mail at home saying that my license will be suspended within 30 days. So i better renew it. So i will rush to Wayne tomorrow. Just stop by to say hello if you see a frustrated Indian around. Last time i was there i ended up arguing with an old paki lawyer, who claimed India has lots of poverty and while in pakistan everyone had a better life.
