You think you've waited too long? A friend of mine (NIW, NSC) has been waiting for his 485 since July 2004. And my wife was just approved a few days back after having waited for 2.5 years. You're definitely not the worst.

Well I know people waiting since 2001....
 
You can file WOM as you planned if you want, but the concensus is you have to wait at least 1.5 years with 2 years the best. Because unlike citizenship cases, WOM for 485 cases are not so strong and need to convince the judge that the delay is EXCESSIVE. I've indeed seen WOM cases filed between 1-1.5 years, but very few. And with the increasing number of 485 WOM lawsuit filed in recent months, USCIS will definitely try to deal with it and fight back those weak cases. --Just my 2 cents.
 
I am waiting for my I-485 since 1/15/2004. Name check hasn't cleared by now. My priority date was 3/2002 and I'm on EB2.
