NIW fits better, but I-485 ROW unavailable. EB1???

I am applying myself (no lawyer). Have been reading for some time and seems like I can build a strong case for the NIW which I was going to apply for. However, the EB2 I-485 are now unavailable even for the ROW and who knows what's next? Will they back up even more?

I am now considering the EB1 (extraordinary ability) which I think is more stringent and seems overall less of a "fit" for me, especially since I am not using the lawyer. I am now very confused. Is it better to go for a stronger NIW case and hope that EB2 will clear, or take a risk and go for the EB1? Any thoughts on the matter, please?

My credentials. US PhD in Biomedical Engineering, 3.5 years of postdoc experience, 19 peer-review publications (about 7 1st author), 100+ citations, 10+ abstracts/presentations, funded grant from the Department of defence (I am the principal investigator). Very "sexy" research area (cancer health disparities). Can get about 10 very good letters.

What do you guys think? Thanks a lot!

The supply of visas is refreshed on October 1st every year. The few that are backed up in the queue will be at the head of the line. The longer you wait, the further back in line you get. That said, consider when the EB-2 visas ran out this year, it took a long time, so, there should be EB-2 visas available, probably one for you before they even decide on your visa petition. Don't wait, and go for the more realistic visa category.

thank you very much for your reply. My gut does tell me the same thing, go for whatever seems like the best fit! But my concern is that maybe next year the quota will be reached in March instead of July. What if my I-140 is pending for a long time and I am late for that year? I will then be very sorry for not going for the EB1. Maybe I am overthinking this. Maybe I should just collect the documents and take one day at a time.
