Hi!

I am planning to land in toronto by air from india. can I apply for PR card at port of entry,Toronto giving my friend's address.Waht kind of documents are needed to apply for Pr card at the port of entry(photos etc.,). Do I need to wait till I receive that card in toronto or can I leave for india after week or two after applying my SIN card.I want to come back to canda after 6- 8 months after finishing my personal work in india. How safe it is to leave canada without having the Pr card in hand. What kind of document to show as setlement funds at the port of entry.Do I need to show all money in US or candian dollars or some in cash and remain in bank letter from india.does it help. I appreciate if some one help in replying my questions.

thanks

Here's what you need to apply for PR card
a) the application form filled
b) 2 PR card specific photos
c) landing papers certified
d) passport copies certified
e) the "supplement" application form filled where one photo gets attached (the form is to be ordered from CIC, do it now)
f) the fee receipt, the payment for which is for $50 to be made in a local bank
g) the above application(a) and photo notarized...&
h) hope i didnt miss anything

As you can figure, you won't have most of the stuff at the airport, so no you can't apply for PR card at the port of entry/airport.

But, within a day or two you can gather all the above so you can file for it within a couple of days max, after landing that is. And meantime you can file for your SIN and health card too.

Coming to your wanting to leave for 6/8 months without having collected the PR card.....here's what i've *heard* and i'm stressing on the heard part coz it's purely hearsay, just make sure you verify this info....if for some reason u leave canada w/o PR card and plan to come back next year...here is the so called emergency entry back....go to ur nearest canadian consulate with your landing papers and other immigration info and they will issue you a temporaray PR which is just valid for one entry to canada .......they might also make you wait for 2 weeks before they get your PR card from canada. *BUT* all this is good if and only if you did already apply for PR card when in canada *and* let PR dept. know you had filed for PR card but are leaving the country for an indefinite period of time. I assume that is the case so they dont destroy the card.

What i'd suggest is, after landing right away call PR dept and just ask them what you are expected to do in an emergency where you are leaving for india for 6 months w/o PR card. I've called CIC and PR dept for very absurd questions, millions of times too, and they have been very concise and very helpful.

Good luck.

Hi! Priya,

I read an article on candian Govt web site. that all new immigrants landed are automatically registered for pr card no need to apply separately.I am just pasting the artcile here for your info.

New Immigrants

Beginning June 28, 2002, all new permanent residents automatically receive their PR Card in the mail following their arrival in Canada. At the point of entry into Canada, personal data is confirmed as part of the landing process, and if complete, a Card is produced.

If you did not provide your mailing address to CIC at the point of entry, please do so as soon as possible. You can provide this information on-line, or you can contact the PR Card Call Centre at 1-800-255-4541. Please note that if we do not receive your address within 180 days of the date of your admission, you will need to re-apply for your PR Card and pay the applicable fee.

Please notify us of any change in your mailing address as soon as possible. You may send us your change of address by mail, or use the on-line Change of Address service.

If you do not receive your PR Card within 30 days after sending CIC your address, please contact our Call Centre.

Please reply if yours or your friend's experience is different. So that I can prepare for other option

thanks
