I am a Canadian citizen who will be done my post secondary education in may, after that I will be looking for work in the States, my question is can I obtain a working visa by myself or do I need to be sponsored in by an employer? I just don't want to be at a disadvantage when applying for jobs.
any info would be great
thanks

Hello,

You need to find US employer who is ready to employ you and is ready to petition on your behalf for the H-1B visa, the quota for which will open on April 1st. Or you can get in the US on the TN Visa or the H-2B visa.

TN is the most suitable and the cheapest option for you. The employer has to give a "TN specific letter" to you and you go to the border to get the TN authorization. It costs $50 for TN + $6 for the I-94, total $56.

(It depends whether your occupation falls under the TN specific job categories.)
