Hi,

This is my first time on the forum. I am a Canadian TN, needing to extend my TN. I am on my second TN, having reapplied enroute from Calgary last year.

My current TN is expiring May 6, 2007. Also, my passport expires June 12, 2007. So, I am in a quandry about renewing. Can someone help me with these questions:

1) Should I apply for TN extension by mail, or will it be better to do so at POE? Will the customs officer renew my TN on a passport that will expire in a short period of time?
2) Should I send away for my passport renewal before, at the same time, or after I do something with my TN?

I am looking at renewing by mail (I understand as long as the I-129 is in process, I am in status and can stay and work until I get my notification, as long as I don't leave the US), and at the same time sending for my new passport (meaning that I would need to send my passport back with my application).

Can anyone offer any advice on this? I am stressed that I mistimed the passport and Visa. If it was one or the other, I wouldn't be worried.

Thanks in adavance for any help!

I was in a similar situation. My TN expired end of Feb. and my passport will expire in July.

I submitted my passport application in mid-Dec. and was hopping to get my new passport before that (I still didn't get it due to the big inflows of apps).
Though I didn't send my old passport to Passport Canada as I needed to travel overseas around Xmas (you can do this by asking Passport Canada to send the new one to your nearest Consulate, and swap it when the Consulate receives the new one).

You should definitely start to apply the new passport now. It takes at least TWO months. Un-freaking-believable..........

I don't think you should have any problems with the expiring passport. I renewed my TN by mail in FEb and my passport was expiring the same say as my TN, no issues here. Now that the TN stress is over I will mail in the applications for the new passport,
Good luck,
Lisa

Thanks for your experiences. Has anyone had any issues with a TN application at the border with a passport that would expire soon?

Would it be advisable to renew both by mail, as those above have, or is doing the TN in person a better alternative?

Thanks - there seems to be some good experience based info on this forum.

Well if you aren't planning on leaving the country at all, then why not just apply for a new TN by mail if you will still be at the same company/sam position. That way you can send in your passport now and not worry about getting it back before your current TN is invalid. Not sure if you need to nowdays also send in a copy of your passport to apply for new TN's by mail at all, but you could just photocopy the front part with your picture at least.

Yep I just sent in for my passport a few weeks ago and my parents told me it will take a long time now to process it. I sent in for my US passport last week (about 3 weeks after the Canadian one) and I'll probably get that months before I get the Canadian one back. So being May is when it expires, I'd do the mail in TN...

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your comments. I'm sure I'll have some more questions yet :)

Dale.

Since a passport is not required for getting a TN, whether or not it is expiring is immaterial.

Get the TN, then go about renewing the passport, for reasons other than TN.
