Hello,

I understand that once you start your residency on a J1 Visa the only way to keep going after residency is J1-waiver.

I have a bunch of qtns regarding J1 visa and J-1 waiver. It would be great if anyone can help me out with these.

1 - Is J1 visa approved on a yearly basis or it is approved for 3 years at one go.If approved yearly how easy or difficult it is to get it approved ?

2 - When should one start looking out for J1-waiver jobs?I mean in PGY2 or PGY3.Do ALL VA hospitals have J1 waiver jobs ?How do we get a list of places accepting physicians with J1-visa ?

3 - Do we first have to apply for a J1-waiver job (have the job acceptance letter )and then file with USCIS for waiver ?

4- How many years do we have to work at a J1-waiver place and What is the next step after completing J1-waiver job? Do we have to ask the employer to file H1B ot directly GC ?

5 - During all this process is it necessary to stick to the same J1-waiver employer till your final GC is processed?

6 - How are the chances og going through all this if one is in a residency program on J1 visa in a IM residency program which has it's residents rotate in the VA facility?

7 - Can I get my current H1B converted to J1 being physically within the US?

Thank you for your input

Please read the sticky about j1 waiver at the top of this forum, started my m_img. It will answer almost all of your questions.

Rearding J1 renewal while on residency, it is usually done annually by your program. Dont worry, there is no risk in getting it renewed annually and your program bears the cost. I know a few people who got ds2029 for 3 years while doing fellowship and didnt have to get it every year. Not sure how it was done.
