New TN-Where to start

Hi

I have been offered a position as a Assistant Tennis Coach at the University level (Bachelor's Degree required)...They have told me that I would be eligible to apply for a TN NAFTA Status, but I have no idea where to start and if it would be considered as a "TEACHER" Position.
Should the school apply through the USCIS first, and I will only show up with the approval notice at the POE?

Any reply will be very appreciated, since I have no clue where to start and I need to get it done in the next few days

Thank you

This is something for your potential sponsor to handle. They need to provide you with a qualifying TN letter, so the ball is in their court (I promise I did not start out intending to say that -- really). Applying to USCIS will take some time, so border petition is the way to go. Since they apparently know how to spell "TN", I'm assuming they also know how to write the required letter. You will then need only your degree to get the TN.

Thank you for your reply Nelsona.

I am pretty sure they never did this before, so I want to make sure I am well informed. I know that this is a particular situation, given the type of job I got offered, so I am not sure I qualify for any of the approved job titles. Therefore, would it be better to go the TN way or the H1B way?

TN is easier and faster but restrictive in the fields that it covers. H1 is via lottery and the quota for this FY is already maxed out. If you go the route of H1 and get selected in the lottery, the earliest you can start is Oct-1-2017. Not sure if your employer would want to wait that long :). This said, as Nelsona pointed out, get them to generate a good TN letter. If they are willing to go the USCIS route, I am sure their lawyers can generate a good TN letter tying your qualifications to the position being offered. Agree with nelsona that border petition is the best/fastest. All the best.

Universities are generally exempt from H1 quotas, so they could apply H1, but the poster does qualify for TN. Their inexperience notwithstanding, THEY are the ones needing to proceed.

There are many sites which describe the mechanics of TN, they should be consulted first.

Let's leave H1 to the H1 forums.
