If I have checked "No" for Issue a new SSN card option on the DS 230 Part II and on the form they give at the consulate. What do I need to do to remove the restriction on SSN?

Just show up at the SSN office with MRV/I-551. Or do I need to wait for the Physical card?

Thanks

Wait for about 10 days for your information to filter down to SSA systems.
Then approach the nearest office and apply by showing your Passport. You
don't have to wait for the physical green card.

I need to do this as well. Can you tell me what is MVR or where can I find I-551 forms?

Thanks

It is MRV, and it stands for Machine Readable Visa. In recent times the consulates have started affixing the Immigrant Visa also in the passport just like the H1 and other Visas.

I-551 is a stamp in the passport put in when the Immigrant Visa holder enters US. It confirms the fact that you entered US as a Legal Permanent Resident and serves as proof till you receive the actual Green Card. This stamp is valid for 1 year and if you don't receive the card even by then, you will have to visit the nearest INS office to get an extension.

There may be a slight change in the procedure now, and they seem to be
issuing a letter in place of this I-551 stamp.

No 551

Hi Raju,
We have the MRV's on our passports, when we entered Phila on Oct 17th, the only stamp we got was the regular stamp everyone get's when one enters USA, is this abnormal?? Did we/officer miss out on something?? We still haven't received anything by mail.

GCM,

I dont think there is anything to worry. I entered lax on 1st nov and got only admission stamp. I did not get i-551 ink stamp. I read in a memo somewhere and understood the following - for mrivs bearing the language - "upon endorsement serves as temporary..." below the photo in the PP, only admission stamp is needed. If you look closely, you will find that the stamp will be on the page adjacent to the mriv and will have a small portion of the stamp on the mriv page itself. Ask your lawyers to be sure. they will have all the recent rules. I am not too knowledgeable, so dont take my word and feel free to confirm with anyone. If you get conflicting info, please share.

Thanks,
Dilbert

From reading on the board, this seems to be process now.

The I-551 stamp is no longer stampled, but the endrosement of your MRV serves as I551

i personally will be at peace only when i see my card on hand. it appears that majority of folks get the regular i-551 stamp with date (i year from entry date) written on it.

gcm, do u have the end date of 1 year written on ur pp? i dont have that even. i only have the admission stamp + the endorsement line below the photo on the mriv page.

I am not going to worry abt this too much since there is nothing i can do abt it and the major part of the process is over

Now one more headache. Although we opted not to receive a new SSN/card still my husband got one. A new card with a new number. He already had SSN as part of his Graduate Assistantship....Phew!

Don't what's in store for me now.

Has this happened to people here before. If so, how do you get it rectified?

hey rashmi,

In ds230-I, u have a column which asks if u want to have a ssn mailed but there is also a place where u enter ur current ssn#.

At the consulate after collecting my docs, another lady appeared at the same window and asked me to fill out a form - essentially the same qns as in ds230-I which asks for my current ssn# and if i want a new card. I said yes. at the end of the interview, I specifically told the officer that i filled this form and i already have a ssn. he said it was alright and that i would get only a new card. At the POE, the lady said that i need not hurry to get the card changed (from ins work authorization needed) since i already have the # that i have been using. But all this does not mean there wont be confusions. i will know that only when i get something or dont get something.

I would suggest going to the nearest ssn office or calling the ssn 1-800#. I've spoken to the ssn office and they are pretty helpful. They should be able to tell u what happened to ur husband's old #. he might have used it in different places and will need that org # to retrieve information. even for a lost card, they issue the same #, not a new #. I would also like to know how to rectify this, incase there is a confusion in my case.

Got my Plastic card

OK after worrying so much, finally the Plastic came in yesterday, and welcome letters the day before. Still awaiting the SS cards.

Good luck with the SSN cards. Let me know if it comes ... ;)

We went to the local Social Security office and applied for my new card (with out the restriction clause). They agreed that issual of a new card with a new number (to my husband) was a mistake. Coincidentally it's the same office (in fact they tracked down the clerk who worked on the case) which issued the card. Although the card comes from Baltimore. They said the request for the new card came from USCIS/DHS @ LAX on 10/29/04. That' a day after we arrived into the US. Looks like the Immigration officer took the liberty of assuming my husband didn't have a number.

My Surname and Given Name seems to have been sorted or say okay from the beginning. But my husband's is messed up now. USCIS/DHS records have forced his middle name to be his last! The SSN clerk said they can't give the card in the old format. I mean the name. But as they have in DHS records. So, now we have to sort it out with them before heading back to SSN office.

What a mess! Red tapes same everywhere...

It's no surprise. The officials act on some whims ...

Some people they proactively issue new SSNs, when there's none reqd., for some even if it's reqd. nothing happens.

Go figure ...
