new Passport requirements ???- can someone comment?

Hi:

I was just going thro the indian consulate webpage at SF. I found the following

"Persons holding Indian passports with 20 year validity are advised to apply for a new 10 year validity passport by following requirements applicable for issue of new passport. The new passport will be issued gratis except for applicable mailing charges"

Does it mean that people have 20 years PP validity should apply for a new PP without any reason.. Anyone know anything??

Any help will be appreciated.

I am also keen to know about this issue - my wife has a 20 year passport and my case is currently with the NVC. I am going for CP. I called the Indian Consulate at NY but was unable to talk to anyone.
I recall reading in one of the posts as well as a news item on the web where a Indian guy had gone on a holiday to South America and on his return was arrested because the immigration officer believed not countr issued a 20 year valid PP. However in India they did for a brief period issue 20 year PP. I am trying to contact the consulate about this and will post the outcome. If anyone out there has any info on this please let me and the rest of the forum users know.
 
My Passport is alid for 20 yrs too.

Ok so I spoke to Mr. Vjayant ....Counsul at the SFO.
He told me since one of the passengers was troubled they have given an option to all Indian passport holders with 20 yr validity to change it to a regular 10 yr validity passport for thier own Convieniance. and free of charge!!!!
He repeatedly told me IT IS JUST AN OPTION.
He also told me that ("since my case is still under adjudication and i wouldnt want to change my passport at this juncture") I could do it anytime.
Unlike the passport guys in India this guy was very courteous and even said he will change that notice on the site to avoid more confusion.
 
I think I would agree with Mr. Vijayant. Wait till the plastic comes in. It would be good idea to keep a printout of the embassy's notice (in case there's any trouble)

When I spoke to Indian consulate in SF, I was told that I could get it done now or 3-4 months later (i said I am waiting for cp interview). The person was very courteous and he said it was advised since they dont want indian citizents to get in any trouble and that it was free. I am going to just not do anything until my gc process is over. If a new PP is issued, the PP # will change and half our docs will have one # and the other half will have some other #.

For the benefit of everyone,

I did speak with a consul officer at CGINY - she also said that it is an option available for all those who have a 20 year valid PP to change it into a 10 year validity and it is done free of cost. Hope this helps all you guys out there.

However it is clarified that the 20-year validity passport is a valid travel document and the change is optional at the discretion of the holder.

I guess Mr. Vijayant actually did what he said he would.
Now only if USCIS was doing what it was supposed to we wouldnt have this forum .would we :) :cool:

This is a valid statement as far as the applicant is concerned. The question I have is, does it matter if we change the PP of dependent, like in my case, my wife? My I-140 is just approved and I am not sure if we have given the dependent PP information at any stage before this. Even in DS-230 there is no PP information (as far as I reviewed that form). Please correct me if I am wrong.
 
I am not sure how gc processing works with dependants. me - single, so cant help you :( . There are many others more experienced who have had dependants.. sorry.

here is another thought - the consulate @ sfo atleast has explicitly stated that the change is optional. i think you belong to CGNY. If they explicitly state its optional, then you can decide when you want to change the PP...

{I think if you should wait till your GC is complete then you can do yours and your wife at a time, any ways we don't know for sure if anything can surprise us anytime, better wait as precautionary method }
