My current Indian passport valid for 10 years is about to expire and I am trying to renew/get new passport. I have the following questions based on that? Could someone please answer it?

1) DO I have to RENEW the existing passport or apply for a NEW PASSPORT?
2) What APPLICATION FORM and ASSOCIATED DOCS should be submitted?
3) Will the CURRENT PASSPORT be returned if a NEW PASSPORT is provided?

Go the the Indian Consulate website under whose jurisdiction you are and you will get the details there.

You will get back your old passport with stamps of CANCELLED on all pages.
You will have to staple this old passport to the new one ( the Consulate itself will do that, if not, you have to do it) and carry both the passports together whenever you need to travel.

Hi
Thanks for the replies. I have one other question related to procuring new passport. Could someone please answer?

1. Today I have a valid H1B visa stamp on my current
passport. After getting my new passport will the EXISTING H1B VISA STAMP (in the current passport) still be valid or what STEPS have to be taken to get a valid visa stamp?
2)If it is valid , how do I USE it when I travel?

The H1B stamp in your current passport will still be valid and the Indian Consulate will not stamp "Cancelled" on this page.

Since you need to carry both the old and the new passport together on all your travel, you are OK with the H1B stamp in the old passport.

But make sure to carry both old and new passports together.

When your current H1B expires, you will have to obtain an extension/new H1B.

After the above, the next time you travel out of the US, you would need to go to a US Consulate and obtain a fresh stamp of your new H1B in your new passport.

Do we have to send copies of both passports of any immigration related work like applying for AP, EAD?

No. You need to send copies of only the new passport.

But if your old passport contains any pertinent information like your current H1B or something like that which is essential for the purpose, then send the copies of the old passport as well. In the cover letter you may write both your passport numbers referring to them as new and old. And you may also print on the copies of the old passport as " old passport page" so that there is no confusion to the USCIS.

I am uploading a fillable version of the Indian passport application form; and you may download it from the link below. This is the same form available from the website of Indian Embassy Washington DC, only change is that it is fillble on computer. You may use this form for all the consulates in the US (NY, Chicago, SF, Houston)
I made this form fillable in May 05 when i was applying for a new passport. I used it for chicago consulate without any problem.
...
This form i am making available for benefit of all indian citizens who need to apply for passport renewal and want a fillable version of the form. The indian embassy has not yet made this form a fillable version.

Hi
Thanks everyone for the reply. I also want to get a PCC on the NEW PASSPORT when I APPLY to get a new passport . Hence it would be a NEW PASSPORT + PCC together. Based on this I have the following questions:

1) How do I REQUEST PCC in the NEW PASSPORT?
2) What APPLICATION FORM, DOCS have to be submitted to get it?
3) What is the FEES that I have to pay for PCC and can the payment be made in a SINGLE Money order/Bank Draft etc containing the fees of new passport + pcc on it + shipping charges?
4)How long does it take to RETURN the new passport + PCC+old passport?
5)If "Miscellanous form " needs to be filled out to get PCC
a) What do I REPLY for question 6) which requests for my "current passport No" ,"place of issue","date of issue"and "valid until". Since I am applying for a new passport and want a PCC on it I don't have this information ?

>>>> write a covering letter (that you need both: New PP+PCC) and follow up with telephone call to the consulate. chicago consulate picks up tel at 1pm and 9am, other times you get their voice mail

2) What APPLICATION FORM, DOCS have to be submitted to get it?
>>>> new passport form + misc. form

3) What is the FEES that I have to pay for PCC
>>>>* $20 for PCC if the passport was issued from same consulate >5 years back.
* $20+$20 referral fee, if passport was issued from a different consulate or issued <5 years back from the same consulate.

3a) and can the payment be made in a SINGLE Money order/Bank Draft etc containing the fees of new passport + pcc on it + shipping charges?
>>>>Yes. that's how i did it in July 05 and i recommend also.

4) How long does it take to RETURN the new passport + PCC+old passport?

* for PCC only for passport issued from same consulate <5 years back or from a different consulate: 1-2 months

Hi J1Victim
THanks for the detailed explanation. I have already completed a PCC REFERRAL on my CURRENT PASSPORT and hence based on that I have the following questions when I apply for a new passport + PCC on it.

3) What is the FEES that I have to pay for PCC
>>>>* $20 for PCC if the passport was issued from same consulate >5 years back.
* $20+$20 referral fee, if passport was issued from a different consulate or issued <5 years back from the same consulate.
### Will the PCC FEES be $20 only or $20+$20?

4) How long does it take to RETURN the new passport + PCC+old passport?
>>>> * for PCC only for passport issued from same consulate >5 years back: 2 weeks
* for PCC only for passport issued from same consulate <5 years back or from a different consulate: 1-2 months
* for PCC+New passport: 2-3 months.
###Will New Passport + PCC still TAKE 2-3 months after the referral on my current passport has been done? Is there any EXPEDITED option to get it back in a month?

6)What is a GOOD TIME to talk to the COnsulate General Chicago representative? Is it only at 9AM and 1PM? I always only get their voice mail and they don't return the voice mail as well.

what are the good phone numbers to call to check whether PCC referal is complete for the Chicago consulate whether they could issue the PCC and what time would be a good time to call them. I called multiple times at 312 595 0405-227 but nobody picks. Please assist me.

Hey to all
I need to renew my passport in Chicago. But I would like to know the fastest time I can get the passport? Is there any way I can get it in a DAY? If so please someone tell me the procedure and fees? Or else the next best would be 4-5 days or even a week!
Thanks for all the suggestions on the page
Take care people

i believe if you go to chicago consulate physically and submit the documents you could get it in 1-2 days .

I recently renewed my passport from the Indian Consulate General in India and received the new passport as well as the old one today-Thursday (I had submitted it personally five days back)

I was surprised to see that the new passport has a "NEW" number!! Now is that the normal thing to do? I know its a NEW passport but should not my new passport have the same number as the old one? I mean in the future do I have to enter both the numbers in any form that I fill???? or just the new number???

If this is a mistake then has anyone faced this before. I am a GC holder so am not too worried about the implications but still had these nagging doubts.

Anyone can clarify on this?
