New I-94 on an expired passport of an asylee

Hey folks,

I was granted asylum by an immigration judge three weeks ago and I am supposed to get a new I-94 in the next few days. A problem I have is that my passport [from the country where I fear persecution] has expired and I don't see any way of renewing it without jeopardizing my asylum status and/or the safety of my family and my own. The letter from my local USCIS branch asking me to pick up my I-94 says I need to bring my passport. I am supposed to get a new social security card and EAD card afterwards

Does anyone know what the implications of my expired passport would be?

Thanks in advance.

just take your expired passport or any other type of official ID that you might have (Driver's License, etc). The social security administration will give u your social security regardless of the expiration situation of your passport and as This also applies to your EAD and I-94 pickup.

The immigration authorities are well aware of the fact that you are not supposed to renew your COP passport after you become an asylee. After all, that is what they require you to do! If they asked, explain the situation.

You will have no problem.

good luck

This will not present a problem for you.

tributeblinky and thankful,
Thanks for the reassurance.
I have had so much misfortune with the damned immigration system that I have grown too cautious and vigilant.

My experience is quite different from the posted comments.

My sister' application for Social Security has been pending for more than 3 months because the local office (Delaware) is waiting for Homeland Security to 'validate' her expired passport. Not sure how they can do that, but the manager at the office advised us that the I94 and the letter from the Judge were not enough and they needed proof of Age on any kind of ID document.
The only doc we had was the passport and because it has expired, they at first refused to process the application. Upon my insistance, the manager agreed to process using the expired passport with a caution that the file will be sent to DHS. We are still waiting and not sure what steps to take next.

DMV has refused to issue a DL or ID without a SSN.

Do we have another option?

Thanks.
