Hi:
My wife recently had her H1B approved with a start date of Oct 1, 2004.
How do I go about applying for SSN? Do I have to wait until Oct 1 to even go apply for a SSN or can I go now and be ready. I'm under the notion that you cant possibly work without a SSN either.
What do I do? I live in Columbia, MD and I need some pointers as to what documents need to be presented where and most importantly, when.
thanks in advance for all the helpful folks out here.

Assuming that your wife had never had a SSN before( if she had, she has to continue with the same SSN), fill out the SSN Application and submit at the local SS Office. Take her passport, current visa proof, and H1B approval, etc along with. The SS Office will make copies of these and return you the originals.

There is no harm in trying now itself so that she receives her SSN card and can start working from October 1.

On the approval date she can start working without the SSN. (They will write SSN pending). In which time you will have to get the SSN.

I have applied for my wife H1 visa. She is currently on H4. I was wondering if i can get her SSN based on the Reciept of H1B (not approval). As we know that once an employer files for H1B, the consultant can start working from teh date of reciept of H1B reciept. Approval comes later. i will appreciate if you could give some views on teh same.

nope she cannot work till the approval comes if she was on H4 earlier. only if her prev status allowed her to work which H4 does not can she start work as soon as she receives receipt.

any work done before h1 approval is strictly illegal. beware.

and no SSN til her status changes with USCIS, that happens only after approval

No one can get SSN before the effective start date from H1B Approval notice.
Even if you go to SSA office and they will say come on Oct 1st.

You can not work while having receipt # for new H1b and SSA will not agree.

varsityboyz,
Did you tried going to SSA for your wife's SSN, if yes
please share your experience.
Thanks
